Breast augmentation is a highly personalised procedure, and the placement of your implants plays a crucial role in achieving your desired look. At North East Breast Surgery, we offer subglandular insertion breast enlargement in Newcastle, a technique where implants are placed above the chest muscle and beneath the breast tissue. This method provides a natural, enhanced appearance with a shorter recovery time, making it a preferred choice for many patients.
If you’re considering breast augmentation and want to explore your options, our expert surgeon, Rob, is here to provide honest, tailored advice to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Subglandular breast augmentation involves placing the implant above the pectoral (chest) muscle, directly under the glandular breast tissue. Unlike submuscular placement, where the implant sits beneath the chest muscle, this method keeps the implant closer to the skin surface, providing enhanced projection and a more defined cleavage.
This technique is particularly beneficial for athletes or individuals who frequently engage in upper-body exercises, as it minimises the risk of implant distortion due to muscle movement.
Since the chest muscle remains untouched, post-surgery discomfort is reduced, and healing is faster.
Implants sit closer to the breast surface, providing a fuller and more defined shape.
Unlike submuscular placement, subglandular breast enlargement implants are less likely to shift when flexing or exercising.
This technique is best suited for individuals with moderate natural breast tissue, as it helps maintain a natural look while providing volume.
If you participate in high-impact sports or weight training, this method avoids interference with muscle function.
Subglandular placement is an excellent choice if you:
However, if you have very little natural breast tissue, a different placement method, such as dual-plane or submuscular insertion, may be recommended to provide additional coverage for the implant.
At North East Breast Surgery, we ensure a comfortable and personalised experience throughout your journey.
We assess your goals, body type, and suitability for subglandular placement.
We determine the most appropriate implant size, shape, and type to match your desired results.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically lasts 1-2 hours.
Patients can return to light activities within a few days, with full recovery expected within 4-6 weeks.
Expect mild swelling and tightness; pain is minimal compared to submuscular placement.
Most patients resume normal activities, but avoid strenuous exercise.
The implants settle into place, revealing final, natural-looking results.
Since the chest muscle remains untouched, subglandular placement generally has a shorter and less painful recovery compared to submuscular alternatives.
Subglandular placement sits above the muscle, offering quicker recovery and more cleavage enhancement. However, submuscular placement may provide a more natural slope for those with minimal breast tissue.
There is a slightly higher risk of visible implant rippling compared to submuscular placement. This is why it’s recommended for those with moderate breast tissue, as it provides natural coverage.
Breast implants typically last 10-15 years before they may need replacement. Regular check-ups help ensure long-term satisfaction with your results.

He is an amazing doctor and treated me last year . I have redness in my breast and was very concerned. He put me at ease and I feel very relieved.

With an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results, Rob plans every step of the procedure, promoting careful consideration and personalised attention to detail to achieve the best results for his clients.
It is very difficult predicting the final cup size after breast augmentation surgery. An approximate estimate is that between 150 and 200 cc’s represent one cup size.
This procedure is performed as a day-case under general anaesthetic (completely asleep and unaware). This means you arrive, have the procedure, recover, and go home the same day. You will have 24/7 support should you need to reach out to someone for help.
You will come back to The Beverley Hospital at weeks one and two post op. At the week two appointment, the dressings should be completely removed. You can then start gently massaging the scar using a simple moisturiser which improves scar quality. Rob will see you at week two to check how you are getting on, then make further arrangements to see you between 3 and 6 months.
There a lot of different bras on the market designed for women after surgery. Ultimately you should look for a supportive non-wired front fastening bra that is comfortable. You may need to buy a couple as predicting the exact final size is difficult.
Following your breast augmentation, you will need about 4 weeks of downtime. Following this you can start building up physical activity. If your breast implants have been placed under the muscle, you may need up to 8 weeks before more intense exercise using the upper body.
It takes a while for your breasts (and muscles) to adapt to the increased volume behind them and as such the final results are visible at 3 months. The tissues need to stretch and it not uncommon for submuscular implants to feel like they are sitting too high or look square. With time, the implants will drop into a better more rounded position.

The capsule is the natural shell your body forms around the implant. In most patients this is thin and not noticeable. In some patients, for reasons not totally understood, this can thicken and cause the breast to harden. In some cases, it can distort the breast shape and be uncomfortable. Some patients elect to have further surgery to remove the implants and the capsule (capsulectomy). Over ten years this will happen to about 1 in 10 women with implants, but a far smaller number require surgery.
There is no ‘expiry date’ on implants. From about 10 years, changes can develop in the breasts which prompt women to seek revisional or corrective surgery. The longer the implant is in, the higher the chance of rupture however there is no set time in which an implant must be replaced. If it is doing the job you in tend it to do, and you’re happy, then they can be left alone.
Most manufacturers will have a warranty with implants that would replace the implant within a set time frame in the advent of a rupture of severe capsular contracture. Some manufacturers may offer an extended warranty that you can pay an additional fee for.
Rob almost exclusively uses Motiva implants. That is because they have a brilliant safety track record, a low rate of capsular contracture and natural soft feel. The feedback so far has been excellent.
