What Is Dual Plane Breast Implant Placement?

Our dual plane breast augmentation in Newcastle offers an advanced implant placement technique where the upper portion of the implant sits beneath the chest muscle, while the lower portion rests under the breast tissue. This method combines the benefits of both under-the-muscle (submuscular) and over-the-muscle (subglandular) placements, creating a natural look with improved projection.

Dual Plane Breast Surgery in Newcastle

The Key Benefits of Dual Plane Breast Enlargement:

Provides a smooth transition from the upper chest to the breast, avoiding the “stuck-on” implant appearance.

Gives a fuller yet natural upper breast shape.

Particularly beneficial for those with thinner breast tissue.

The muscle covers the upper portion of the implant, minimising visibility and palpability.

Works well for patients with moderate to low natural breast tissue.

Is Dual Plane Breast Augmentation Right for You?

This placement is ideal if you:

  • Desire a natural slope with more upper breast fullness
  • Have moderate breast tissue and want a balance between lift and projection
  • Want to reduce the risk of implant rippling or visibility
  • Are seeking a long-lasting, stable result

How Does the Procedure Work?

We discuss your aesthetic goals, body type, and implant options.

The dual plane technique is carefully mapped out to suit your unique breast anatomy.

Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, typically lasting 1-2 hours.

Expect 4 to 8 weeks for full recovery, with tailored post-operative care.

Recovery Timeline

First Week

Swelling and tightness are common; pain management and limited movement are recommended.

Weeks 2-4

Most patients resume daily activities, but strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Weeks 4-8

Final settling of implants, with natural-looking results emerging.

While dual plane augmentation can cause slightly more post-op discomfort than other placements due to muscle involvement, it settles well over time and provides long-term benefits.

FAQs About Dual Plane Breast Augmentation

Dual plane offers the best of both worlds—it provides better implant coverage than subglandular placement and less movement distortion than full submuscular placement. This makes it an excellent choice for long-lasting, natural results.

Because part of the implant sits under the muscle, you may feel more tightness or discomfort initially. However, this subsides within a few weeks, and the result is worth the temporary discomfort.

Breast implants typically last 10-15 years before they may need replacement. Our under the muscle breast implants in Newcastle also reduce the risk of complications like rippling or bottoming out, making them a long-term solution.

FAQs about breast augmentation surgery in Newcastle

Breast enlargement, often known as breast augmentation or a ‘boob job,’ involves the use of implants to enhance breast size and shape. With an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results, Rob plans every step of the procedure, promoting careful consideration and personalised attention to detail to achieve the best results for his clients.

It is very difficult predicting the final cup size after breast augmentation surgery.  An approximate estimate is that between 150 and 200 cc’s represent one cup size.

This procedure is performed as a day-case under general anaesthetic (completely asleep and unaware). This means you arrive, have the procedure, recover, and go home the same day. You will have 24/7 support should you need to reach out to someone for help.

You will come back to The Beverley Hospital at weeks one and two post op. At the week two appointment, the dressings should be completely removed. You can then start gently massaging the scar using a simple moisturiser which improves scar quality. Rob will see you at week two to check how you are getting on, then make further arrangements to see you between 3 and 6 months.

There a lot of different bras on the market designed for women after surgery.  Ultimately you should look for a supportive non-wired front fastening bra that is comfortable. You may need to buy a couple as predicting the exact final size is difficult.

Following your breast augmentation, you will need about 4 weeks of downtime. Following this you can start building up physical activity. If your breast implants have been placed under the muscle, you may need up to 8 weeks before more intense exercise using the upper body.

It takes a while for your breasts (and muscles) to adapt to the increased volume behind them and as such the final results are visible at 3 months. The tissues need to stretch and it not uncommon for submuscular implants to feel like they are sitting too high or look square. With time, the implants will drop into a better more rounded position.

Thankfully the risks of having a breast augmentation are low but all surgery carries potential risks. The capsule is the natural shell your body forms around the implant. In most patients this is thin and not noticeable. In some patients, for reasons not totally understood, this can thicken and cause the breast to harden. In some cases, it can distort the breast shape and be uncomfortable. Some patients elect to have further surgery to remove the implants and the capsule (capsulectomy). Over ten years this will happen to about 1 in 10 women with implants, but a far smaller number require surgery.

There is no ‘expiry date’ on implants. From about 10 years, changes can develop in the breasts which prompt women to seek revisional or corrective surgery.  The longer the implant is in, the higher the chance of rupture however there is no set time in which an implant must be replaced. If it is doing the job you in tend it to do, and you’re happy, then they can be left alone.

Most manufacturers will have a warranty with implants that would replace the implant within a set time frame in the advent of a rupture of severe capsular contracture. Some manufacturers may offer an extended warranty that you can pay an additional fee for.

Rob almost exclusively uses Motiva implants. That is because they have a brilliant safety track record, a low rate of capsular contracture and natural soft feel. The feedback so far has been excellent.
