What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

North East Breast Surgery’s breast reduction in Newcastle, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess skin and tissue to create a lighter and smaller chest more in balance with your frame. It is typically performed for medical reasons to alleviate physical and emotional discomfort caused by excessively large breasts, but it can also be done as a cosmetic procedure to improve breast appearance.

There are different ways of achieving an excellent aesthetic result that meets your expectations, and Rob will talk you through the options. Below are the different scar patterns that are common, which allow a ‘lift’ to be achieved.

Am I Suitable for Breast Reduction Surgery?

The suitability for breast reduction surgery in Newcastle is determined by a combination of medical and personal factors. If you have uncomfortably large breasts that negatively impact your quality of life, then a breast reduction might be the right solution. At your clinic consultation with Rob, he will take the time to listen to how your large chest impacts your physical and emotional wellbeing and your desired goals. Together, you’ll come up with a plan to achieve them. Common symptoms that can be improved by a breast reduction include:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Bra strap indentation
  • Rashes underneath the breasts
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Unable to wear the clothes you want

FAQs about breast reduction surgery

The best thing you can do is be a healthy weight and not to smoke. Being overweight and smoking are the biggest risk factors for developing complications, particularly wound healing problems.  Rob will suggest trying to modify these factors prior to having surgery.

You will have access to 24/7 support following surgery. At week one and two you will come back for a dressings check. If all is well at week two, the dressings will be removed completely and no further dressings will need to be applied. Rob will see you at week two in the clinic when this is being done.

It is very difficult to accurately predict the final cup size following surgery. Whilst you can expect a reduction in the cup size you wear, being able to put an exact figure on it is challenging. It is possible to ‘over-reduce’ someone’s chest size, and the final result should be a balance of achieving a small enough bust size to deal with symptoms you have with leaving something in keeping with your build.

You can usually expect to see final results at between 2 and 3 months following breast uplift surgery.  Initially the breasts may feel quite tight, and sometimes too high. This will gradually settle as the breasts drop into their final position and the skin relaxes.

Breast reduction surgery is performed as a day case procedure under general anaesthetic (you are asleep and unaware). This means that you come in, have your surgery and go home the same day.

Most patients would say that it can be a bit uncomfortable initially, but over the first few weeks following surgery this settles down. You will be given painkillers to take home with you and the anaesthetist will discuss a performing a nerve block whilst you are asleep.  This a very effective way of keeping you comfortable when you wake up.

Usually wounds will heal by about 10-14 days following surgery. Your dressings will be changed at the clinic in Tyneside Surgical Services at weeks one and two following surgery. At two weeks, you should be dressing free.

For the first few weeks you should avoid any strenuous activity, and particularly swimming whilst the dressings are on. The dressings are splashproof but not completely waterproof so avoid getting them completely saturated in the shower or bath.

Walking around is encouraged.   Your body will be the best guide as to what you can manage after surgery.  By weeks 4-6 you’ll be able to start exercising lightly using the upper body too.  By weeks 6-8 you should be getting back to normal. Don’t worry if you’re not, some people take longer to recover.

There are no set rules, and usually insurers ask you to seek the advice of your surgeon. Most women feel able to drive from about 1-2 weeks following surgery, but some women need a bit longer before they feel comfortable. Putting a bit of padding under the seatbelt as it crosses your front can help.

No surgery is without its potential complications; howeverRob has a very low complication rate. This is a result of careful selection of the right options for each patient. The potential risks with breast reduction surgery include slow to heal wounds, scarring, asymmetry (difference in the sizes between the breasts) and changes to nipple sensation.

There is no evidence that breast reduction surgery reduces the ability of mammograms to pick up breast cancer.
