Breast augmentation is a personal and carefully considered decision. One of the most important aspects of the procedure is deciding where the implant will be placed. At our breast surgery clinic in Newcastle, we offer submuscular insertion breast enlargement – a popular technique where implants are placed beneath the chest muscle to create a smooth, natural-looking result with added implant coverage.

If you’re considering breast enlargement in Newcastle and want expert advice on your options, Rob, our experienced breast surgeon, will guide you through every step.

What Is Submuscular Breast Implant Placement?

Submuscular placement, sometimes called subpectoral placement, involves positioning the breast implant beneath the pectoral (chest) muscle. This approach differs from subglandular insertion, where implants sit above the muscle and directly under the breast tissue.

This method provides an added layer of tissue over the implant, which is particularly beneficial for women with a smaller amount of natural breast tissue or those wanting to reduce the risk of visible implant edges or rippling.

The Key Advantages of Submuscular Insertion:

The Benefits of Submuscular Breast Enlargement

Many clients choose our submuscular breast enlargement in Newcastle for its aesthetic and medical advantages. This method offers:

The additional muscle coverage helps create a gentle, natural slope from the chest to the breast.

Ideal for women with minimal natural breast tissue, the muscle helps conceal implant edges, reducing the chance of visible rippling.

Studies suggest that submuscular placement may reduce the chance of capsular contracture – a complication where scar tissue forms tightly around the implant.

The chest muscle helps hold the implant in position, potentially reducing the risk of implant sagging over time.

Is Submuscular Breast Augmentation Right for You?

This type of implant placement is often recommended if you:

  • Have a small amount of natural breast tissue.
  • Are concerned about implant visibility or rippling.
  • Desire a more natural upper breast slope.
  • Are looking to minimise the risk of complications like capsular contracture.

During your consultation at North East Breast Surgery, Rob will take the time to understand your goals, assess your breast anatomy, and recommend the most suitable implant placement for your needs.

The Submuscular Breast Enlargement Procedure

Rob will assess your body shape, goals, and suitability for submuscular placement.

A bespoke surgical plan will be created, taking into consideration implant size, shape, and positioning.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes between 1-2 hours.

You can typically return to light daily activities within a week, although complete recovery may take around 6 weeks.

Recovery Timeline

Weeks 1-2

Mild to moderate tightness and swelling around the chest muscle.

Weeks 3-4

Gradual return to normal activities but avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise.

Weeks 6+

Implants will settle naturally, and the final shape will begin to emerge.

Recovery from submuscular placement may take slightly longer compared to subglandular insertion due to the involvement of the muscle, but most patients feel the long-term benefits outweigh the initial discomfort.

FAQs About Submuscular Breast Augmentation

Initial discomfort may be slightly greater than with other methods because the chest muscle is involved. However, this settles within a few weeks, and the results provide excellent longevity and a natural look.

Yes, submuscular insertion is often chosen specifically for its ability to produce a smooth, natural breast shape, especially in those with minimal natural tissue.

Most breast implants last between 10-15 years. Regular check-ups are recommended to ensure long-term satisfaction and safety.

FAQs about breast augmentation surgery in Newcastle

Breast enlargement, often known as breast augmentation or a ‘boob job,’ involves the use of implants to enhance breast size and shape. With an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results, Rob plans every step of the procedure, promoting careful consideration and personalised attention to detail to achieve the best results for his clients.

It is very difficult predicting the final cup size after breast augmentation surgery.  An approximate estimate is that between 150 and 200 cc’s represent one cup size.

This procedure is performed as a day-case under general anaesthetic (completely asleep and unaware). This means you arrive, have the procedure, recover, and go home the same day. You will have 24/7 support should you need to reach out to someone for help.

You will come back to The Beverley Hospital at weeks one and two post op. At the week two appointment, the dressings should be completely removed. You can then start gently massaging the scar using a simple moisturiser which improves scar quality. Rob will see you at week two to check how you are getting on, then make further arrangements to see you between 3 and 6 months.

There a lot of different bras on the market designed for women after surgery.  Ultimately you should look for a supportive non-wired front fastening bra that is comfortable. You may need to buy a couple as predicting the exact final size is difficult.

Following your breast augmentation, you will need about 4 weeks of downtime. Following this you can start building up physical activity. If your breast implants have been placed under the muscle, you may need up to 8 weeks before more intense exercise using the upper body.

It takes a while for your breasts (and muscles) to adapt to the increased volume behind them and as such the final results are visible at 3 months. The tissues need to stretch and it not uncommon for submuscular implants to feel like they are sitting too high or look square. With time, the implants will drop into a better more rounded position.

Thankfully the risks of having a breast augmentation are low but all surgery carries potential risks. The capsule is the natural shell your body forms around the implant. In most patients this is thin and not noticeable. In some patients, for reasons not totally understood, this can thicken and cause the breast to harden. In some cases, it can distort the breast shape and be uncomfortable. Some patients elect to have further surgery to remove the implants and the capsule (capsulectomy). Over ten years this will happen to about 1 in 10 women with implants, but a far smaller number require surgery.

There is no ‘expiry date’ on implants. From about 10 years, changes can develop in the breasts which prompt women to seek revisional or corrective surgery.  The longer the implant is in, the higher the chance of rupture however there is no set time in which an implant must be replaced. If it is doing the job you in tend it to do, and you’re happy, then they can be left alone.

Most manufacturers will have a warranty with implants that would replace the implant within a set time frame in the advent of a rupture of severe capsular contracture. Some manufacturers may offer an extended warranty that you can pay an additional fee for.

Rob almost exclusively uses Motiva implants. That is because they have a brilliant safety track record, a low rate of capsular contracture and natural soft feel. The feedback so far has been excellent.
